I just love going to the pumpkin patch during the autumn season. Maybe, because when I was a young girl one of my all-time favorite books was, It s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. I enjoyed reading books and I knew one day that I would become an author myself. What I did not know was how my life journey would resemble a roller coaster ride. Are you ready to go for a wild ride? I am waiting for you to join me. Come on take your seat. Oh, you had better fasten your belt.
At the age of 13, writing a letter to the Great Pumpkin seemed a little silly. I really was a bit too grown-up to be trick or treating. I never really cared about the sugar- coated candy, either. Have you read the list of ingredients on those gigantic bags of candy bars? Besides, I wanted to keep my perfect dental record of no cavities. I also tend to smile a lot, so keeping my pearly white teeth seemed important to me. It would be fun to take Snoopy to the pumpkin patch. However, I do not have a dog named Snoopy. What is a girl to do on this Halloween night?
Lately, I had been thinking about an important job I needed to complete. First, I would write some things on a piece of paper. You know all the negative stuff. Somehow, I could remove the shovel from my parent s garage without them becoming suspicious. If I am caught this is going to be a wild ride for you and me. How do you explain to your parents on Halloween night just why you are holding a large shovel? Oh, mom and dad, I am just going to the pumpkin patch to wait for the Great Pumpkin to show up. Well, the shovel is just in case there are ghosts. I might need it for protection. This roller coaster ride (life journey) is becoming crazier by the moment. So just, hold on and take a deep breath. Things are going to get a little spooktacular around here.
What is next? I have to locate the right *cemetery so I can just bury it. I know you are thinking this is just a little creepy. Besides, where else do you go when you need to bury something? However, it is bad to the bone so I have to do this. Can you help me? I know of a *cemetery that would work out really well. It is not very far from our house. Come, just follow me. It is starting to get very dark and it is a little chilly out here. Do you happen to have a coat or a blanket with you? I know what you are thinking. I should have brought my friends with me. But then again, Sally was the only one who thought Linus might be right about the Great Pumpkin. Not for very long, though. Soon Sally left the pumpkin patch angry with him. He stood there all alone. My friends will think I am crazy just like Linus. No one would understand, but you.
Now that I am holding the handle, I just need to get my foot on the base of the shovel. The ground is soft so I should be able to dig a big hole. I have quite a bit to bury. After setting my shovel down just long enough to place all of the pieces of paper, containing the disease diabetes and anything negative such as the diabetic label, in the ground, I am ready to start piling on the dirt. You can help if you want. Wow, I buried it. No, we buried it together. Diabetes is dead and buried, but we are alive! We made a choice tonight to live a sweet life. It sure feels good. Are you still with me? Wake up, shake your bones. You scared me for a moment. You know, this has been the best Halloween night ever. I cannot think of a better treat than to have spent tonight with you.
Maybe, some day I will be well-known just like Linus. No, not because I was waiting for the Great Pumpkin to show up, but because I helped millions of children and adults bury diabetes worldwide.
*The cemetery is really just the family s garden.
